UPDATE: Changed Ridley's facial hair to reflect the fairly recent change in his design. Also, colored in the pull-handle of Marc's chainsaw. Can't believe I overlooked that until just now.
Hey folks!
Say hello to my entire 4th of July weekend. I spent most of the day Saturday sketching this and all day yesterday vectoring it. It's a beast!
This is something I've wanted to do for a while now, but haven't been able to muster up the energy. Also, the characters were poorly-designed until only a few weeks ago, so now seemed like a good opportunity.
This is the Duncan family you've come to know and love over the past year or so (in small doses). I wanted to do a family portrait of them each living in their own gamer stereotype, at least to some extent. Ridley is so into his classic game he's off the couch (which makes him the focal point and that's important as he's the main character). Pac is showing off one of his back-in-the-day arcade gaming trophies and wearing his winner's jacket. Denise is meditating. Gwen is chilling with her plastic guitar. And Marc is revving up his toy chainsaw. ;D
If you'd like to know more about these characters, go here: [link] Or look further into my gallery. There is a folder devoted to them.
All I really have to say is, this image basically did exactly what I wanted it to, giving me few problems along the way. I worked really hard to capture a lighting that suggested the TV was the source of the hypnotic greenish-blue glow. I hope that this feels like a family game time sit-down, which wouldn't be complete without the original gamer fuel: pizza and orange soda. It hasta be Shasta, mom! Please tell me some of you remember Shasta cola...
Oh, and hey, a working title! I've been stewing over several ideas to call this project (referring to it as "The Gamer Family thing" for a while now) and while I came up with many ideas that were fun and appropriate, I kept going back to "The Duncan Button." It just worked for me.
Anyway, please let me know your thoughts! I intend to do similar group portraits with the characters of Charlie Dubai and Yoki Safari, so be on the lookout for those soon (hopefully), and of course I'll continue working on the Charlie Dubai comic, slowly but surely. ;D
Adobe Illustrator CS. Sketched in Photoshop CS.
Enjoy!
"The Duncan Button," all related characters and scenarios, and this image are copyright (c) me, Andrew "Drew" Green. This image is not for use in any way, shape, or form without my permission first.
BY THE WAY: I intend to make prints of this and sell it on my Etsy shop to revitalize that whole operation. Would any of you be interested in signed prints of this? the dimensions are 11x17 so it's nice and big. Lemme know!
Thanks so much! It's a fantastic font called Crimefighter, and you can find it for free from Blambot: [link] Explore the rest of their site, they have some really awesome comic fonts.
