Alright, here it is. I have finally finished the commission for , and the both of us are very happy with the result. It probably has a good 40-45 hours put into it if we're also including the concept sketches I did (and the many false starts that will thankfully never see the light of day they're so terrible).
You may have seen these characters floating around DA before, in countless art styles and mediums and the like. They are 's pride and joy, and he has commissioned them by many many many artists here on DA (and off of DA, I would assume). They are Castor (star), Galante (circle), Dux (cross), Edmund (lines), and Hazel (square), and are part of a joint project between him and another artist. The project is called "Scarletine."
One of the most important things that he had me keep in mind when creating the image was that he wanted something a bit more colorful than what many other artists had been doing with his characters since this seemed to be one of my strong points. Naturally, my love for crazy and garish colors caused me to do something so uniquely "Drew Green" that it just deserved the named "Electric Scarletine."
I should say that while this image took up a lot of my art time, it wasn't a nightmare. Rather, it was a challenge and a great learning experience (I did some things with metal that I don't think I've ever really tried before, and I like the results). It could also be described as an honor, since being commissioned by Audley and drawing these characters in particular almost seems like a wright of passage.
Audley was an absolute dream to work with. He really understood my strong points as an artist and it was fun and interesting reading the things he had to say. He was always prompt, specific, and friendly in answering my questions. If Audley ever contacts you and is interested in commissioning you, consider this a wholehearted recommendation. The experience couldn't have been better!
Anyway, I've probably typed you guys to tears, so I'll let you look at the image and get your opinions. I hope you enjoy!
Scarletine is (c) Audley B. This image is (c) Audley B. and myself, Drew Green. No one is allowed to use or tamper with the image outside of himself and myself, unless you are given permission by him (do not ask me, I will not grant you permission to use it as they are not my characters). Please respect this and don't be a nasty, art-stealing troll, or else you may be doomed to choke on a rather large xylophone in the near future, and my fingerprints may or may not be found on that xylophone.
And you're both right, it's a lot more colorful than some of the other Scarletine pictures out there (though when the dominant color is black it's rather understandable). It's also interesting to see these characters out of their usual style.
This has to be one of the best renditions of her characters I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a few. X) ) I love these characters in your style, they look so cool! And the colors are really rad.
I love the attitudes you put into their faces. Great job!
I hope to be commissionned by her one day, Ive heard a lot of great things on how she's very friendly & all and let's face it, her designs are freaking nice.
You did 'em justice, didnt expect less of you. She was right to chose you for this, you sure gave 'em more colors then usual but it's not overly flashy either . I love how you did all their outfits pitch black with only lil white details, it makes it feel like they've got a close bond together and/or are linked somehow.
Technically, the dominant color doesn't have to be black, I just thought that having them all wear black was kind of snazzy. Audley made an interesting comment regarding the use of black in many of the pieces she has commissioned (this isn't an exact quote, but it's close): A lot of people sort of mistake black for brown, or use brown in place of black.
I personally find that when brown is the dominant color, that usually leaves little room for much else outside of warm colors (well, unless you're crafty, of course).

I must agree that the colors in this commission is AMAZING!! Electric indeed! What a beautiful representation of Aud's characters....I'm sure he's going to be thrilled!
*p.s. I must add that you've drawn my fav pic of Hazel now. Coat + gray hair + TOP HAT + wings = love!
You know, Hazel was the one I was the most uneasy about. I was telling Audley somewhere near the beginning that I sort of wanted to take a different approach to him, since many of the other artists preferred to portray him as the most easy-going and light-hearted of the bunch (perhaps because wings and a top hat can easily fit into the anime stereotype and everything in anime is...so darn happy, I guess ;D). I'm glad you like the moodier, more monochromatic take on him!

You are now a full-fledged popular DA artist.
